Props Designer
DESCRIPTION: Responsible for purchasing, acquiring, manufacturing, properly placing, and/or overseeing any props needed for a production. The Props Designer will work closely with the director, scenic and costume designer, and the stage manager to fully and successfully complete the properties as designed. The Props Designer position is typically a hired student worker slot.
The props process generally moves through the following events/periods: the pre-rehearsal period, the rehearsal/build period, the pre-technical rehearsal period, the technical/dress/preview rehearsal period, the running of the production period, and the strike/dismantling period. All due dates, build dates, and rehearsal and performances dates are specified in the Production Timeline.
REPORTS TO: Director, Scenic and Costume Designers, and Work Study Supervisor
EXPECTATIONS:
Read the department Props Manual (in Appendices)
Develop a complete list of props for director approval
Create and adhere to budget for props
Track and account for all purchases
Provide all necessary rehearsal props by designated deadline
Attend production meetings and any additional meetings as needed
Shop or build props as necessary
Provide completed show props for all technical rehearsals, dress rehearsals, previews, and all performances
Oversee and conduct the dismantling and returning of all the properties at the end of the run for each production
