Intimacy Director

DESCRIPTION: An Intimacy Director (ID) is a professional trained to oversee and or choreograph scenes involving theatrical intimacy. In alignment with Theatrical Intimacy Education, the University of Portland Theater Program uses defines intimacy as any content that leverages an artist’s characteristics to stage physically close or heightened race, sexual, gender, pregnancy, disability, religion, national origin, or age-related content.  

 Note on nudity and partial nudity: The UP Theater Program does not use full nudity in any production. Partial nudity is defined as anything less than what you would wear to rehearsal.  

REPORTS TO: Production Producer & Director 

EXPECTATIONS: 

  • Meet with the Stage Director to determine the intimacy needs of the story and to discuss how intimacy rehearsals will be integrated into the production process.  

  • Establish systems of communication, consent, boundary practice, self-care cueing, and deroleing. 

  • Choreograph all intimacy.  

  • Encourage that all intimacy is documented by actors and stage managers. 

  • Refer to the Theatrical Intimacy and Instructional Touch Policy. (Addendum B) 

Assistant Intimacy Director

DESCRIPTION: The AID is the Intimacy Director's assistant. The ID may not be present for all rehearsals or performances. If an AID is assigned to a project, they will run all intimacy calls and assist in modifying any choreography to fit any shifting boundaries. The AID and the SM will both document all choreography. 

REPORTS TO: Intimacy Director, Stage Manager, and Director 

EXPECTATIONS: 

  • Learn all intimacy choreography 

  • Coordinate times for intimacy calls with stage management (as directed by ID) 

  • Oversee any intimacy calls.
