Lighting Designer

DESCRIPTION: Creates the light plot and appropriate cueing for a show that supports an aesthetic lighting approach for the environment of the play, based on the needs of the script, and the director’s interpretation/vision of the play. The lighting designer will properly showcase the performers, the costumes and the setting, varying the flow of the lighting throughout the production to meet the action on stage.  

 

REPORTS TO: Director, Producer and Technical Director 

 

EXPECTATIONS: 

  • Read the script and determine research and dramaturgical needs 

  • Consult the Production Calendar and adhere to deadlines 

  • Meet with the director and other production team members to determine the concept for the show within which all designers will work 

  • Attend all design and production meetings 

  • Adhere to the budget that has been allocated 

  • Be aware of and advise on health and safety concerns 

  • Attend first day of light hang, and all focus sessions 

  • Provide cueing during a paper tech 

  • Attend all rehearsals through opening night 

  • Provide the following deliverables: 

  • light plot 

  • channel hook up 

  • instrument schedule 

  • gel and gobo list 

  • rental requirement 

  • cue breakdown

6 Weeks Before Opening: Design Meeting and Cost Out/Priorities; Renderings and research

5 Weeks Before Opening (and ongoing) Production Meeting

4 Weeks Before Opening: Company Meeting/First Rehearsal/Lighting Presentation

2 Weeks Before Opening: Designer Run

1 Week Before Opening: Light plot (by Monday), hang (Wednesday), focus (Thursday), programming and paper tech (Friday), Looks & Levels, Q2Q

Week of Opening: Tech, Dress Rehearsals, Performances
