Work Study and Campus Employment:
If you are eligible and would like to work in either the Scene or Costume shops, Prop Management, Electrics, Front of House, Box Office and Marketing employment opportunities are available. The Costume Shop hires roughly 5 students a year and the Scene Shop hires about 10. The program also hires a Properties Master a Master Electrician, and Front of House and Marketing hire 5- 6 students. We ask that the student treat this employment as a job. You are responsible to maintain hours on a weekly basis and report directly to the Shop Supervisors if working in scenery, lighting, costumes or props. Front of House staff reports to the Producer and Marketing reports to their faculty supervisor. Theater majors and minors will have priority over non-majors in the hiring process, but many non-majors are employed in our shops. If you fail to meet the expectations of either shop you will be first placed on probation, and if you still are not working up to the expected standards you will be let go and replaced. Working in our shops is a privilege for our students to get practical hands-on work experience and skills, do not abuse it.

Students find open positions in the theater program through the online jobs posting system set up for student employment at www.up.edu/studentemployment.
Students must submit a resume and cover letter into the University’s HireTouch system to apply for a job. You will be contacted by our shop supervisors, producer or faculty supervisor to interview for the open positions. If you are successful, you will then be hired for the posted position.
You will be trained in the safe procedures for all equipment used in the spaces that you are hired to work in. Most majors and minors get some safety training in theater program coursework but safety training is necessary and mandatory for all work study and campus employment student workers when beginning a new position.
PLEASE ASK IF YOU DO NOT KNOW HOW TO DO SOMETHING AND NEVER USE A TOOL IF YOU DO NOT KNOW HOW TO USE IT SAFELY.
You will be asked to keep an electronic record of your hours on a time sheet webpage in the Pilots Portal provided by Financial Aid. This appears under the Self-Serve section, then click employee and time sheet. A hard copy time sheet will be kept in our shops you must sign in and out. At the middle and end of the month, you must get the supervisor sign off on your electric time sheet. You will only get paid for the hours you submit by the 1st and 15th of each month. Pay day is the 10th and 25th of each month.
All employees will receive an evaluation of their work 6 weeks into the semester. If you are not working up to required standards you will receive notice of probationary status. If you do not improve your work habits in 4 weeks you will receive notice of employment termination.
If you are not meeting your hour requirements you will be let go from your employment in the shops without a probationary period.
If you are having problems with school and class work, realize that both shop coordinators are Faculty and are aware of deadlines. You must however ask to be excused from your slotted work hours prior to the work slot that you will miss.
Because the work revolves around the opening of our productions, the Friday after the opening of a show the scene shop will be typically be closed. Usually the hours during dead week are limited and there are no hours available during Finals.
